On 15 April 2008, San Diego Opera presented Verdi's Aida in a sumptuous, traditionally staged performance directed by Garnett Bruce. With a cast that could act as well as sing, Bruce was able to tell this story of doomed love in a credible manner that appealed to the emotions of the onlookers. Michael Yeargen's sturdy sets transported the audience to ancient Egypt while the costumes by Peter J Hall, originally seen at the Dallas Opera, helped to establish the rank of each character.
