Colorful scenery and detailed Chinese costuming on the masked denizens of Peking, the Forbidden City, greeted the audience as the curtain rose. The sixty piece orchestra, expertly led by Maestro Krassimir Topolov, played a well-shaped and accurately intoned rendition of Puccini's most inventively orchestrated score. Stage director Giorgio Lalov staged the work in a traditional manner that combined visual spectacle with dramatic veracity, all of which was intensified by Gueorgui Boyukliev's atmospheric lighting.
