At a Milan luncheon with Giuseppe Adami, who wrote the librettos for Il tabarro and La rondine, Puccini was introduced to Renato Simoni who had written a play about Carlo Gozzi. Simoni and Adami suggested that the composer look at Gozzi's works as part of his search for a new operatic subject. Thus, it eventually came to be that Adami and Simoni were selected to work on the composer's last opera: Turandot.
