Stockhausen's slip
Karlheinz Stockhausen, speaking at a press conference on 17 September 2001, made some regrettable comments about terrorism and art, suggesting that the recent attacks in the USA were 'the greatest work of art imaginable for the whole cosmos'. Stockhausen later withdrew the comments, with a personal statement published on his website, suggesting that he had never made them, but a tape recording by the German public broadcasting company Norddeutsche Rundfunk proves otherwise. Four concerts of Stockhausen's music, which were to have formed the centre of the Hamburg Music Festival, have been cancelled.
