Prom history

On 15 September 2001, Leonard Slatkin became the first American to conduct the BBC's 'Last night of the Proms' concert in the Royal Albert Hall in London UK. Following the campaign of terrorism in the USA the previous week, the programme was altered, however, with more reflective music replacing most of the traditional high-spirited sing-alongs. The modified programme included Barber's Adagio for strings [listen] and the last movement of Beethoven's Choral Symphony. Of the traditional programme from the second half of the concert, only the hymn 'Jerusalem' remained.
