Death of Canadian scholar
Canadian administrator, critic and scholar Gilles Potvin died 4 September, aged 76. He put to use his vast knowledge of music in Quebec as one of three editors of the Encyclopaedia of Music in Canada. He was devoted to Montreal and Quebec, and their associated music histories, and he wrote for La Presse, Le Canada, Le Devoir, Musical America, Opera Canada, The Gazette and the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He also worked for various CBC departments (notably Radio Canada International), co-founded the Minute Opera Company in 1949 and wrote programme notes for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and for Pro Musica. Fellow encyclopaedia editor Ken Winters called Gilles 'fair, courteous and a lovely person to work with ... a real gentleman of Canadian music.' Read a full obituary at montrealonline.com.
