Opera's two balance sheets
John Crosby, founder of the Santa Fe Opera, and the company's General Director for more than 40 years, retires in August 2000. Santa Fe has set the standard for summer opera in the USA, due to Crosby's far-sightedness. Crosby maintains that an opera company has two balance sheets - the artistic and the financial, and that 'if you attend to the former, the financial will usually take care of itself.'
