Unaware that behind his back Slook has endorsed Fanny's love and made Milfort his heir, Mill is thirsting for revenge against the perfidious Canadian and practises hideous thrusts in imaginary duelling against a phantom opponent.

As his weapon Slook eventually offers the pipe of peace, and the duel is off. It remains for Slook to expound his arrangements, with which Mill can only finally concur, since the interest on Slook's capital might well be a grandchild within the year. The warehouse can at last relax at this triumph of imperial good sense.
