Slook falls in readily with Mill's idea that Fanny should form the wedding package; but he had not reckoned with the determination of the young lovers. Milfort has joined the household as the new bookkeeper, but his demand that Slook should return to Canada is reinforced by threats with an outsize pair of dividers, while Fanny makes for Slook's eyes.

Such an outright attack causes not only Slook's retreat but his reassessment of the situation. He is not such a fool as he looks. Fanny and Milfort are obviously in love, so he tells Mill he is no longer interested in the deal.
