Zemlinsky lived from 1871 to 1942 and his composition reflects the lush orchestration and shimmering beauty of early twentieth century music. Although his work is never derivative, it is somewhat reminiscent of Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss. Played by the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra led by James Conlon, this incredibly beautiful work is a magnificent gift to the audiences of the Southwest.
