John Tomlinson made an authoritative King Fisher, very much the business man and a long way from his Wanderer in the recent Siegfried here. His voice is not what it was, but he is an expressive performer and knows how to use his vocal resources to maximum effect. It helps that his superb diction brings out the text.

Though the opera was sung in English, there were surtitles as well. Whilst generally a supporter of surtitles, I did think that there were moments in this opera when it would have helped if we had not known exactly which words the singers were singing.
