<< -- 4 -- Patric Standford SCINTILLATING PERFORMANCE

From the same prolific year
(1970) comes the Concertante Variations on a theme of Nicholas Maw,
which has a very similar balance of six movements, and visits the
same regions of cool composure and Mendelssohnian brightness
[listen -- track 10, 0:59-1:48].
The much more recent Six-minute
Symphony, written in 1997 to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of
the Guildhall Strings, has an air of the North Americas about its
succinct frame, agitation that precipitates into passion
[listen -- track 13, 2:17-3:09].
There is also a performance of the
rather mysterious Sonata on a Motet of 1976, a work that searches
through the great Spem in Alium by Tallis, as if trying to find a
lost idea and finding other luxurious things on the way.
Another highly recommended recording for all who value the work
of real contemporary musicians.
