<< -- 6 -- Ted and Emi Norrish DEVOTION AND HEROISM
The current production of Fidelio, by Nuremberg-born Peter Mussbach
(who also designed it), was first seen there in 1999. The packed house in
the great theatre, and the superb playing of the Bavarian State Opera under
Mehta in the opening Fidelio Overture (as indeed throughout the evening)
created excited anticipation. Sadly however the promise was not completely
fulfilled.

The Leonora (since the production opened) has been Waltraud Meier, a
great Wagnerian -- Isolde, Ortrud, Sieglinde, Kundry, Venus in Tannhauser
-- now at the height of her powers. She sang Isolde on the BSO's Far East
Tour, led by Mehta, last Autumn, and returned to sing Sieglinde when Alden's
Die Walkure was launched this June. She was also the BSO's Dido in
The Trojans at Carthage.
