De Vlaamse Opera also offers a chance to catch some leading continental
voices not always heard in the UK; several of the most impressive are from
Belgium itself, and a number of Scandinavian singers (including Stabell
and Stemme) have made their mark in Flanders. So too have some of the finest
English voices - Christopher Ventris's impassioned, jealous Erik - one of
the most impressive performances in last season's Flying Dutchman
- for example, and perhaps most notably Anthony Rolfe Johnson in the title
role of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex, which also featured Knut Skram
as Creon and the acclaimed oratorio singer Guy de Mey in the key role of
the Shepherd.
