Sinfonia Viva players at Derby Folk Festival impress MIKE WHEELER
Derby Folk Festival has, in the ten years of its existence, established itself as one of the leading events in both the Derby cultural and UK folk music calendars. This year, it had a delightfully unexpected curtain-raiser (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 30 September 2016) in the shape of an hour-long drive-time quartet recital by Sinfonia Viva's string principals — Benedict Holland, Philip Gallaway, Richard Muncey and Deirdre Benscik — which they performed twice, with a half-hour break in between.
It featured three classics of the repertoire with folk music connections, beginning with Kodály's String Quartet No 2, written at a time when the folk influence was starting to take hold on his own work without him resorting to actual quotations...
