This is a straight reissue from the Marco Polo set of Spohr symphonies from the early 1990s recorded in Bratislava, Slovakia. Although conductor Alfred Walter seems to have a way with this often uneven and rather tepid music, his interpretations are consistently outclassed by the excellent Howard Shelley on Hyperion, who brings much more character and clout to the music. This is especially true in the ninth symphony, titled 'The Seasons'...
