Robert Schumann (1810-1856) will always be regarded as a great and yet enigmatic composer, whose unbridled passion for the piano knew no bounds, and whose compositions for the instrument rank with the finest musical achievements of German Romanticism. When Schumann decided to compose his Piano Trio in D minor, Op 63, his life was being buffeted by many a sad event. His health was flagging following an attack of syphilis, and his latest chamber pieces did not find favour with Mendelssohn, or even his own wife Clara. Faced with these disappointments, Schumann decided to flee Leipzig and leave behind all that he loved...
