Xiaogang Ye (born 1955) is hardly a household name for most of us but, on the basis of these two works, this could change. He studied at the Central Conservatory in Beijing and at the Eastman School of Music in New York with such luminaries as Louis Andriessen and Alexander Goehr. His music has strong connections to Chinese culture, using traditional instruments to add colour to the orchestral palette. His Piano Concerto Starry Sky was premiered during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics...
