Lars Cleveman as Siegfried in Nottingham
Siegfried brought the most impressive of Opera North's three Wotans (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 9 June 2016). Béla Perencz's magnificently resonant voice matched his imposing stage presence in long coat and a broad-brimmed hat which, thanks to some well-angled lighting, cast a shadow to suggest his lost eye — something we had to take on trust in the first two operas. Enigmatic in his riddling contest with Mime, in his Act 2 encounter with Siegfried he vividly portrayed a Wotan making a last stand that he knew perfectly well was a lost cause...
