Opera North's 'Die Walküre' impresses MIKE WHEELER
It's already clear that the jewels in the crown of Opera North's Ring cycle are the orchestral playing, and Richard Farnes' conducting. This is not to dismiss the excellent, even outstanding, singers' contributions, or Peter Mumford's all-embracing visual conception. But Farnes and his players provide the rock-solid foundation for the whole undertaking. The orchestra can rarely have been on better form, collectively or individually, while Farnes' grasp of dramatic pacing extends across not just individual operas but, as I suspect we'll come to realise, the entire cycle...
