Across the United States and Canada, the community-based children's choir movement is gaining in popularity almost by the day. Accomplished conductors achieving lofty artistic standards, teaching healthy singing and performing the musical masterpieces of the Western art tradition are building solid community-based children's chorus programmes across the fifty states and ten provinces. From Pittsburgh and Seattle to Washington DC and Toronto, children are learning to perform the arias of Bach and Handel in parallel with the songs of Bernstein and Copland. Teaching children to sing, read music and control their range of emotions, instructing them on how to give immediacy to their performances and of depending on and co-operating with others can often give greater results than working alone — these are the values that singing in a children's chorus can do...
