The compilation on this disc embraces some very popular pieces and some that are rarely performed. Success came pretty late in the career of César Franck (1822-90), and it was only when he was approaching his sixtieth birthday that he started to compose his most enduring works, among which we find the Violin Sonata in A. Composed in 1886 as a wedding present for the thirty-one-year-old Eugène Ysaÿe (1858-1931), the Sonata has been described by the late Professor David Brown as a parable about marriage. It comprises some of Franck's most intimate and passionate music, culminating in a final movement of sheer melodic brilliance...
