Undeniably Spellbinding
A cello and piano recital by Jessie Richardson and Simon Callaghan, reviewed by MIKE WHEELER
Cellist Jessie Richardson and pianist Simon Callaghan have clearly established a thriving partnership. Opening their recital with Beethoven's Sonata in G, Op 5 No 2, the two players were perfect foils for each other, Callaghan often taking the initiative in establishing the music's switches of mood, Richardson responding with expressive, eloquent phrasing (Derby Chamber Music, Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, 20 March 2015). In their searching account of the slow introduction they brought poignancy to the disjointed phrases at the end, and carried the serious mood over into the main part of the movement...
