A Figaro to Treasure

Opera North's Mozart impresses MIKE WHEELER

 

Jo Davies' production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (Opera North, Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 24 March 2015) was set in an Edwardian stately home (shades of Downton Abbey?) that was clearly already going to seed, with significant quantities of peeling wallpaper inside and rain running down the windows outside, flagging the social upheavals to come. Leslie Travers' ingenious stage-set-within-a-stage-set, allowing us to watch characters approaching before their actual entrances, and going away (or not) after their exits, was a neat theatrical metaphor for the upstairs-downstairs comings and goings...
