Nicely Varied
A seasonal programme from the Derwent Singers, heard by MIKE WHEELER
The Derwent Singers and conductor Richard Roddis greeted the official first day of spring with a nicely varied programme of seasonal pieces (Broadway Baptist Church, Derby, UK, 21 March 2015). They made their entrance with Pastime with Good Company, attributed to Henry VIII, sounding a touch over-polite, in spite of the accompanying drum and recorders.
We stayed mostly in the Renaissance, or thereabouts, for the first half, including a nicely flowing account of O Primavera, from Monteverdi's third book of Madrigals, and Marenzio's Già Torna a Rallegrar, whose word-painting was nicely pointed...
