It's good to see Tchaikovsky's Manfred edging its way into the regular repertoire. Part symphony, part extended tone-poem, it is a genuinely underrated masterpiece, prompted by Byron's narrative poem about the archetypal romantic outsider, haunted by his past.
At nearly an hour, it can seem to sprawl if not held on a tight leash, but this is what conductor Jonathan Trout and Derby Concert Orchestra generally succeeded in doing (Derby Cathedral, 14 March 2015)...
