Interpretively, the Symphonia Domestica is a tough nut to crack, and it doesn't sound like Sebastian Weigle has quite cracked it.
The performance begins well enough, if carefully. The conductor plays the opening Bewegt with deliberation and breadth, making it easier to bind the shifting motifs into a unity, but missing some of the score's mercurial quality. Beginning with the Scherzo, a pointed waltz with quirky decorations, Weigle adopts an abstract, 'symphonic' manner, musically shipshape but neither suggestive nor overtly pictorial...
