Wider Focus
Derby Bach Choir's 'Concert for Peace', heard by MIKE WHEELER
Derby Bach Choir advertised this as a 'Concert for Peace' to mark the centenary of World War I, and by and large it succeeded in its aim, nor least in its wider focus on other conflicts (Derby Cathedral, Derby UK, 15 November 2014).
It began with Dona nobis pacem by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks. A fifteen-minute work for chorus and strings, it was an enterprising choice of opener, though it felt rather too extended for its material, and its long slow-moving lines needed tauter control...
