If there are 140 sonatas on these 26 CDs (I may have lost count), not to mention the innumerable other bits and pieces (C P E told Forkel in 1775 there were already 173 pieces), at least he gives us a good idea how to play them. His Éssay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments is good practical sense. His preferred instrument is the clavichord, but of course he is aware of later inventions: 'The more recent pianoforte, when it is sturdy and well built, has many fine qualities, although its touch must be carefully worked out, a task which is not without difficulties.' Certainly he never envisaged Ana-Marija Markovina's concert grand, which is presumably well-built, and the touch impeccable...
