Contrary to most Tchaikovsky recordings, this enterprising CD couples one of the most performed works by the composer with one of the least executed. The Tempest, Op 18, was the second Shakespeare-inspired project after the 1869-70 overture Romeo and Juliet. The latter has always been one of the best-loved works in the Tchaikovsky canon, but The Tempest remains strangely neglected, though in truth, it was never subjected to the revisions that Romeo and Juliet underwent...
