When Enescu comes to mind, it is usually as the teacher of Yehudi Menuhin. But he was persistent enough as a composer to fill the interwar years with an Oedipus complex of his own, while bringing to completion an opera on that most tiresome of subjects. And his conducting was such that he was in the running as a possible successor to Toscanini in New York...
