The most popular concerto-style works in the Baroque repertoire, J S Bach's Brandenburg Concertos remain a challenge to both listeners and performers alike. Written during the early 1720s, all six pieces are dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg, who most probably met Bach in May 1718 in Carlsbad; and although today they enjoy unrivalled fame, this was not always the case. Indeed, despite the huge demands on the players, these concertos remained alive during the composer's lifetime, but after his demise in 1750 they fell into a dark limbo...
