I ought to have heard Michelangeli in my early reviewing days, but perhaps he cancelled all the concerts I meant to attend. Ever capricious, he had been endorsed at the beginning of his career by such master pianists as Cortot and Paderewski. The cover photograph shows him haggard and careworn twenty-five years after the last of these live recordings was made. The C minor sonata Op 111 concludes Beethoven's astonishing series in glorious style, and Michelangeli makes powerful music of these initial tempestuous pages...
