A new recording by The Steinberg Duo (comprised of pianist Nicholas Burns and violinist Louisa Stonehill) provides an interesting mix. As Burns writes, 'If at first glance the pairing of [Philip] Sawyers with Elgar seems strange, it is worth considering the similar musical environment in which all three works were written.' After all, both composers were stylistic outsiders, each preferring a quasi-tonal language of their own over the avant-garde fashions of their respective eras. In fact, it is perhaps because of this isolated creative existence — one cut off from leading artistic circles — that Sawyers had to wait so long to gain the recognition he deserves...
