The Gould Piano Trio,
heard by MICHAEL TREMBERTH

 

When Truro 3 Arts issued their programme for 2012-13 I realised that this could be my first opportunity to hear the Goulds in Cornwall, although both violinist Lucy Gould and 'cellist Alice Neary individually have considerable familiarity with music making at nearby International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove. Neary has worked there at the spring master classes with Ralph Kirshbaum, the American 'cellist of the trio which gave the first performance of the MacMillan in 1997. Truro 3 Arts gets to know of many of their artists through their informal contacts with musicians visiting IMS; in recent years this connection has increasingly and vitally enriched smaller-scale music in West Cornwall as touring by national orchestras has become progressively more costly. The days are long past when I heard Elgar's first symphony under Barbirolli in Truro Cathedral...
