It's easy to see why Turangalîla, after its 1949 premiere with Boston Symphony, became an audience favourite. Its orchestral palette, enlivened by brilliant brass chording and variegated percussion accents, is resplendent. (Commentators are prone to fuss over the ondes martenot, an electronic instrument with an eerie, theremin-like sound, but its overall contribution is minimal.) The faster movements are invested with a rhythmic drive that holds the listener's attention...
