Wolf-Ferrari was born in Venice and died there. He had a very good reason, therefore, to become a distinguished artist, as his father wished. But he also had an aunt who lived in Bayreuth and had known Wagner; so music claimed him and he produced mainly operas, some twenty of them, including many on plots devised by Goldoni, Molière, and Shakespeare (The Taming of the Shrew). His instrumental concertinos were not written until most of the operas were well out of the way...
