As a player, I have gloried both in the massive fistfuls of chords that Brahms gives his pianist, and in the soaring lines of the cello parts. My only regret is that I shall never be a violinist. The recordings by the Fontenay team are twenty years old, and it is a special quality of the disc that the keyboard is given all the weight and resonance that the mightiest modern piano can produce without overbalancing the strings at all. All credit, therefore, to the Berlin experts who originally produced and engineered the CDs, and to their Warner successors who updated them...
