Horwood was born in Buffalo, New York in 1947 and studied there at the State University with, among others, Lucas Foss. In 1972 he moved to Toronto to become professor of music and humanities -- a post he held until just nine years ago.
This CD is a very worthy introduction to the composer by way of a terse three-movement Symphony (No 1 of 1984), a concerto for piano and orchestra in the form of a set of Variations, and two orchestral suites that are each conducted tours around public parks.
The movements of the National Park Suite (1990) visit Forillon in Québec, Jasper in Alberta, Yellowstone (Wyoming) and Fathom Five in Ontario portraying its sombre underwater world...
