Puccini's 'Madama Butterfly' at Arizona Opera, reviewed by MARIA NOCKIN
Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly is always on every list of the most popular operas, but it was not an instantaneous success. The composer and his librettists, Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based their text on an 1898 story with a similar name by John Luther Long, and on Pierre Loti's 1887 novel, Madame Chrysanthème. The opera was first seen at La Scala in Milan on 17 February 1904, with major singers in the leading roles. Unfortunately, it was not well received...
