The two late Janácek works on this disc must provide one of the most challenging programs possible for both performers and recording engineers. Janácek's idiosyncratic, often wayward orchestration -- using as it so often does extremes of orchestral range simultaneously -- tests engineers as much as the orchestra's sense of intonation. His frequent and sometimes violent changes of metre and tempo put the conductor and players on notice. His vocal writing can be every bit as demanding as his orchestral, but above all these works need a tremendous spirit in performance, and a willingness to take risks with the unique mixture of backwoodsman roughness and sophisticated use of mosaic writing that Janácek presents...
