Years ago a brown owl used to watch me at evening time from the west end of a ruined cathedral in Nubia, as I ruminated on a tough day's copying of ancient texts. Neither of us was afraid of the dark, but that was when we parted, each to a separate meal. At Great St Mary's Church, Cambridge, UK, on 26 November 2011, the owl family of mother, father (with gaping goggles), and Plop, was got up by Daisy Nisbet to resemble more a group of Shetland 'snowies'...
