I am a great admirer of the pianist, but sometimes I do wish that I had not started to listen seriously to music from 1950 onwards. I heard Cortot and Gieseking -- just once, followed by Klaus Schilde, Aldo Ciccolini, Robert Casadesus, Albert Ferber, Vlado Perlemuter -- all in Debussy, each at one of the main London concert halls.
