Like Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades is based on a story by Pushkin, and features a female lead character hemmed in by circumstances. There, more or less, the resemblance ends. Instead of Onegin's drama of social and emotional dilemmas, we get a gripping grand guignol tale centring on the secret of a winning hand of cards...
