'Greek' by Mark-Anthony Turnage at the Buxton Festival, heard by MIKE WHEELER
Greek was Mark-Anthony Turnage's first opera, premiered in Munich in 1988. The libretto is adapted from Steven Berkoff's play of the same name, which locates the Oedipus myth in London's East End, where the plague takes the form of racism, violence and mass unemployment.
Music Theatre Wales's staging, directed by Michael McCarthy, picks up on the work's Brechtian overtones to discard the idea of theatrical illusion (Buxton Festival, Buxton Opera House, Buxton, UK, 25 July 2011)...
