Recitals on the organ at Derby Cathedral by Andrew Dewar, David Briggs and Anthony Hammond, heard by MIKE WHEELER
Given that Liszt was himself a habitual transcriber of both his own and other peoples' music, Bernhard Haas' organ version of his B minor Piano Sonata shouldn't, in itself, raise too many eyebrows. Andrew Dewar, Artist-in-Residence at the American Cathedral, Paris, made a good case for it (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 3 August 2011), in full command of its innovative structure, and handling intricate textures with great dexterity. As always in this sort of exercise there were gains and losses compared with the original, the main casualty being the first appearance of the aspirational theme, which didn't stand out with sufficient clarity...
