As a student in his native Denmark pianist and composer Johansen studied with pianist and conductor Victor Schiöler. Subsequently, in Berlin, he became a pupil of Frederic Lamond and Egon Petri, the protégé of Ferruccio Busoni.
He emigrated to America in 1929 first settling in California, and later teaching as artist-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He was thus the first artist in residence as a musician at any university in the USA and became a major advocate of Busoni's mature works, recording the lot. In addition he committed the almost complete keyboard works of J S Bach to LPs...
