George Frideric Handel's
'L'Allegro, Il Penseroso ed Il Moderato',

L'Allegro, Il Penseroso and Il Moderato are three poems by English poet John Milton (1608-1674) that composer George Frideric Handel used as the libretto for an ode. Handel composed it over slightly more than two weeks in 1740. Librettist Charles Jennens arranged Milton's two poems, L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, interweaving them in such a way as to create dramatic tension between the personified characters of Milton's poems, The Joyful Man and The Contemplative Man...
