Whatever its theatrical shortcomings, Act 2 of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker makes an effective, though lightweight, stand-alone concert piece. The Bolshoy Symphony Orchestra and conductor Alexei Stepanov (Assembly Rooms, Derby, UK, 10 May 2011) made the most of the music's colours, and never lost sight of the fact that this is dance music. Individual numbers were vividly characterised, including an unusually sturdy Chinese Dance, and a suitably vigorous Russian Dance...
