I have no idea when Thomas Bowes first learnt to play the Suzukian 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star', or indeed Lewis Carroll's (and my latest piano pupil's) preferred 'little bat'. The important fact is that he has matured steadily towards total mastery of his glorious Amati violin. Walton wrote his concerto specifically for Jascha Heifetz, whose fantastic technique masked a small tone and essential lack of warmth...
